EFFECTIVENESS OF INTERVENTIONS
The interventions have urged change in many areas, which is a promising start to ending child marriage. In Malawi, where they are raising the age of marriage to 18 and they’re emphasizing the importance of girls receiving an education by providing free universal access to primary education for girls and allowing girls who have become pregnant opportunities to continue receiving an education (UNICEF, 2013). In India, the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act punishes any adult man marrying a child, along with anyone performing the wedding or even attending it, by imprisonment and/or fines (Government of Karnataka, n.d.).
Although child marriage has decreased in the developing world, it hasn't decreased very quickly. "In the past 30 years, the incidence of child marriage decreased only 11 percentage points across a set of 60 countries" (Wodon, et al., 2015).
Some of the interventions are not as effective as they could be because of the weak law enforcement in many communities. This weak law enforcement occurs because police officers are also members of the community, and they often times don't go against the community decisions, even if it’s the law (UNICEF, n.d.).
"Looking at the combined effects of welfare costs, earnings losses, and the costs of social services, child marriage leads to extremely high economic costs at the national level. In Niger, for example, which has the highest child marriage rates in the world, estimates indicate that just through three channels — welfare benefits from reduced population growth, better educational outcomes for girls, and lower costs for the public provision of education up to the secondary level — eliminating child marriage could lead to benefits valued at more than $25 billion (in purchasing power parity terms) between 2014 and 2030. These benefits would be tremendously beneficial toward alleviating the country’s deep poverty" (Wodon, 2015).
